Ugh. Wish I had known about the not living underneath people rule last year. My girlfriend and I purchased a condo in Victoria on the second floor of a brand new building. When we first moved in, there was nobody living above us, so all was great. Two months later, a nice couple moved upstairs... Unfortunately, the petite blonde girl practically runs everywhere in the house all day long. I can only imagine that she walks on nothing but her heels as she zooms around the house tidying and doing laundry. Fast-forward to November of 2011 when strange scuffling type sounds are coming from upstairs. These go away, but after a while they're replaced by loud whining and yipping noises. Turns out it's a new puppy... a new GREAT DANE puppy. Needless to say, we're looking into purchasing a top floor condo someplace nearby.

This one particularly struck a chord with me tonight. In a way we're designed to spend our lives growing away from our parents, aren't we? Then, one day, you look back and you don't recognize them anymore. Everything has changed and yet there still exists this almost anachronistic continuity from childhood to now.

In the time that our lives cross with our parents we travel completely opposite paths: us from weak and young to strong and mature, and them from strong and mature to weak and old. Contemporaries who will never quite exist on the same page. And yet as we reach our own apex in life, it is as if we turn back expecting to see them still at their theirs. Instead what awaits us is a pair of strangers, cruelly swapped when we weren't looking, off leading our busy lives.

Even at 32, I still can't stand up to my dad. Even if I know hes wrong and im right, can't do it. I guess maybe sometimes when parents acknowledge that we are older, they themselves feel older. Just a thought.

One year my grandparents and aunts and uncles and parents all somehow made sleigh tracks, reindeer tracks, and Santa boot tracks in the snow on the balcony for Christmas morning. To this day I have no idea how they did that, and it keeps that memory of that feeling of wonder alive. :D (I still tend to peek out the window Christmas Eve night to watch the sky, out of my own tradition, despite knowing the truth about Santa. I swear I heard bells one year when I was little. Another year, I'm pretty sure I saw the red lights on a plane and was convinced it was Santa's sleigh.)

I found me a copy of Donkey Kong to start playing along, but it looks like I've got some catching up to do; I'm only on 1-3 so far. Good to hear you're back home with your cats. I always imagine that it would be so exciting to get to travel around and see all sorts of cool video game related events, but I suppose it would get a bit tiring always being away.

I think I'll spend a bunch of this morning trying to get to 4-10. I ended up pouring a few too many drinks last night, so I probably wont venture out of the house until I get hungry for some $5 foot long. Are you still on the no booze program?

Thanks for writing; I'm sure there's quite a few people that appreciate the daily read.

My cat used up eight of her nine lives once when I found her balanced on an inch-wide sill in my apartment, having squeezed her way through a barely ajar window. I noticed her just in time to see her look at me with this, "Oh-shit-that-was-a-stupid-idea" kind of look and then disappear. Just like that. And it all played out in painful, technicolor, heart-stopping slowness.

Luckily I lived on the second floor at that time. And luckily she landed in a bush. And luckier still it was a bush in the fenced in area of the pool, where someone saw her fall and scooped her up. They were waiting for me with a pie-eyed kitty who instantly launched herself from her "rescuer" to my chest where I'm sure she must have been hoping to biologically fuse with me given the strength of her grip.

But I remember that look as surely as it was two minutes ago, let alone over ten years past. Awful.

Poor Max. Rest in peace, little buddy. And hugs to you for such crummy news at the start of your trip.

Safe travels.
